Ruth Vermont Mine Reclamation

Parson, BC · Ministry of Mining and Critical Minerals

Stabilization and reclamation work at the historic Ruth Vermont mine, a former silver-lead-zinc operation with a mining history extending back to the 1890s in the mountains southwest of Golden. MacKay restored five kilometers (3 miles) of forest service road to establish access to the remote site and excavated and replaced approximately 2,700 m³ (3,500 yd³) of spillway material with riprap. Work adjacent to fish-bearing water was completed using bio-oil equipped excavators, combining remote construction logistics with environmental controls required at a historic mine site.

Infrastructure & Utilities

Fort Macleod Police Training Centre Servicing

Fort Macleod, AB · Town of Fort Macleod

Major water and sanitary servicing for the planned Alberta Police and Peace Officer Training Centre in Fort Macleod. MacKay installed 3,480 meters (11,400 ft) of 450 mm (18”) watermain and 3,440 meters (11,290 ft) of 450 mm (18”) sanitary sewer, including six 900 mm (36”) augered crossings beneath the CP Rail mainline and the eastbound and westbound lanes of Highway 3. Limited available sanitary grade made precise survey and installation critical while major underground infrastructure was constructed beneath active highway and railway corridors.

Mount Michael Bench & Access Road

Sparwood, BC · Teck Coal, Line Creek Operations

Construction of a new pre-bench and mine access road high on Mount Michael at Line Creek Operations. MacKay moved approximately 1.1 million m³ (1.44 million yd³) of material to establish the bench and haul-road network through steep mountain terrain. With 168 calendar days allowed under the contract, MacKay completed the work in 70 days, 98 days ahead of schedule, demonstrating the production planning, fleet coordination, and field execution required to accelerate large-scale mine earthworks.

Mount Michael Contract Mining

Sparwood, BC · Teck Coal

Contract mining of approximately 1.1 million BCM (1.44 million yd³) of coal and waste rock between the 2440 and 2460 benches at Line Creek Operations. MacKay deployed its own production fleet, including 100 and 150T haul trucks, to maintain a minimum production requirement of 6,000 BCM (7,850 yd³) per day. The work required continuous production loading, haulage, road maintenance, and fleet coordination within an active mine while supporting the operation’s ongoing production requirements.

Infrastructure & Utilities

2nd Street South Upgrades

Cranbrook, BC · City of Cranbrook

Reconstruction of eleven downtown blocks on an aggressive single-season schedule, replacing aging deep utilities while maintaining access and service to adjacent properties. The work included approximately 900 meters (2,950 ft) each of new water, storm, and sanitary mains and 24,000 m³ (31,400 yd³) of excavation and embankment. Bypass pumping and temporary overhead servicing kept properties connected while MacKay rebuilt the underground infrastructure and roadway through an active residential and commercial corridor.

Transportation & Civil Construction

Northeast Stoney Trail

Calgary, AB · Alberta Transportation and Infrastructure

Major roadway and drainage construction as part of Calgary’s Northeast Stoney Trail P3. MacKay completed 3.25 kilometers (2 miles) of four- and six-lane roadway grading, interchange construction, stormwater retention ponds, drainage ditches, and culverts. The scope included approximately 2 million m³ (2.6 million yd³) of roadway excavation as part of the ring-road program, requiring large-scale production earthworks to be integrated with a major multi-contractor highway construction program.

Burnt Ridge South In-Pit Mining

Elk Valley, BC · Teck Coal, Line Creek Operations

Final-bench extraction in an active mine environment where conventional production fleets could no longer operate effectively. MacKay recovered approximately 500,000 BCM (654,000 yd³) of coal and waste from the narrowing 1765-to-1727 benches using a high-agility fleet suited to the constrained working area. Continuous groundwater infiltration required ongoing dewatering and an in-house-fused HDPE discharge network, while material was hauled approximately 2.5 kilometers (1.55 miles) from the bottom of the pit to surface stockpiles.

EVO Soil Treatment Facility

Sparwood, BC · Teck Coal, Elkview Operations

Construction of the Elk Valley’s first modern soil treatment facility within an active mine operation. The facility incorporated approximately 12,000 m² (130,000 ft²) of geomembrane liner, 33,000 m² (355,200 ft²) of geotextile, a precast oil and water separation chamber, dry well, and dispersion field. The completed system provided controlled treatment and management of contaminated runoff while integrating new environmental infrastructure into ongoing mine operations.

Mining & Mine Services

Pedro Sotto Alba, Area 22

Moa, Cuba · Moa Nickel S.A.

Phase 3 development of the Area 22 tailings storage facility at the Pedro Sotto Alba nickel operation in Moa, Cuba. Construction required sourcing and transporting aggregates from multiple locations across eastern Cuba, creating a complex supply chain to support the work.

Beyond construction, MacKay worked directly with local crews and management to improve field execution, focusing on loading efficiency, haul cycles, dump operations, and overall material production. Within several weeks, these changes significantly increased material moved. MacKay also supported site safety through field audits, procedure reviews, training verification, and hands-on coaching of supervisory and management personnel.

The facility was delivered on schedule and to specification, providing additional tailings capacity to support continued mine operations.

Idlewild Lake Dam Upgrades

Cranbrook, BC · City of Cranbrook

Modernization of a high-consequence dam within an active and heavily used municipal park in Cranbrook. MacKay constructed a new cast-in-place concrete spillway and low-level outlet, 500 meters (1,640 ft) of bypass piping with a new intake and weir, riprap embankment, and stilling basin, and decommissioned the existing spillway and bypass system. The work required careful water management and construction staging around continued public use of the surrounding park. The completed project received an Award of Excellence in the Civil category at the Commercial Building Awards.

Transportation & Civil Construction

Red Deer Siding

Red Deer, AB · CP Rail

Construction of a 7,000-foot siding extension through CP Rail’s Red Deer terminal to increase rail capacity through a dense urban corridor. MacKay completed earthworks and supporting civil infrastructure along the full length of the terminal while active rail traffic continued immediately adjacent to the work. Construction access, sequencing, and production had to be continuously coordinated around train movements and ongoing terminal operations.
